Client’s Profile
A.M.B.L.E is an untethered, modular, lightweight, impedance controlled, single degree of freedom (Dorsiflexion – Plantar-flexion) actuated, ankle robot designed to improve paretic ankle function and walking stability. A.M.B.L.E provides “assistance-as-needed” using a patented control algorithm during the swing phase of the gait – by helping the paretic foot clear the ground. It is designed to overcome the deficiencies of the original Anklebot design while providing similar clinical outcomes.
The system of interest is the software of the portable ankle robot (AMBLE). AMBLE is used as an exercise device to help individuals with foot drop and restore safer independent walking after stroke under the direction of a PT in a clinical setting.
Client’s Problem:
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), three million older people are treated in emergency departments for fall injuries each year.
- One of the critical risk factors that contribute to these injuries, especially in older adults with underlying comorbidities such as cerebrovascular disease, is a condition known as foot drop, which is an inability to raise the foot during daily life activities such as walking.
- This causes the toes to drag on the ground, which significantly increases the chances of falling. Not surprisingly, nearly 70% of stroke survivors suffer falls-related fractures in the first year alone.
- So they needed a system to calibrate and track all the information of the patients in one place without any hassle
How We Solved The Client’s Problem
AMBLE software, can be classified into two parts – the user app running on an iPad, and a web-based admin portal. The user app allows the user to connect wirelessly to AMBLE, via its interface with AMBLE’s firmware. Once connected, it can be used to adjust input parameters (factors) that customize the gait therapy to a particular patient during a particular trial, adjust AMBLE’s assistance level, store and display the incoming data stream (metrics) from the firmware, view patient records and track progress over time. The admin portal is a web-based application that acts as a centralized database for all the information collected from multiple AMBLEs used in all the Organizations serviced by NextStep Robotics. The portal is organized and visualized to enable handy access to the information. Data transmission is done between the user app and the admin portal via the Internet.
- Connect with the robot device using the AMBLE software application
- Initialize the device to the advised values
- Perform a Foot Calibration
- Perform Walking Calibration
- Calibration values and graphs are obtained
- Use the calibrated values for the therapy or recalibrate
- Perform the therapy and obtain the results along with the patient’s history.
